IRIS Publications Guide: Publication Types

IRIS, is SMU Integrated Research Information System. The Publications module in IRIS aims to have the information on the publications and research outputs of all faculty, staff and students.

Publication Types in IRIS

Publication Type Explanatory Text
Journal related publication type  
Journal Article A journal article is a substantial work of scholarship published in a scholarly journal with a formal process of peer review. 
Book Review A book review is a critical analysis of books or monographs and published in a journal.
Magazine Article A short article by a single author or multiple authors and published in a general interest periodical or industry publication. E.g. ASEAN Newsletter, Business Week, Quantum Magazine.
Newspaper Article An article authored by a single or a group of authors and published in a newspaper intended for the general public. E.g. Business Times, Straits Times, Wall Street Journal.
Conference related publication type  
Conference Paper A paper presented at a conference, which has not been published in a proceedings. Includes invited paper and keynote address. If presented at multiple conferences without substantial additions or modifications, it is to be entered only once, with the details of the other conferences in Comments.
Conference Proceedings Article A paper written by a single author or multiple authors, presented at conference, and published in a volume of proceedings, disk, or website. Includes invited paper and keynote address. A conference paper published in a journal is treated as a journal article.
Edited Conference Proceedings An edited conference proceedings is a collection of papers or abstracts which were presented at the conference compiled by a single editor, multiple editors or organization.
Conference Presentation A presentation of ideas, concepts or results to an audience at a conference, without a full paper, usually in the format of presentation slides. If presented at multiple conferences without substantial additions or modifications, it is to be entered only once, with the details of the other conferences in Comments.
Dataset A research dataset consists of a organized collection of data related to your publications or as a standalone data publication. 

Differences with RPS Publication Types

The number of publication types has increased to cater to the wider variety of publications our faculty have.

One key change is conference proceedings paper and conference paper. A conference proceedings paper is published in a book or publication or online. A conference paper has not been published, often a paper presented at the conference and no version is available publicly.
