This course highlights the globalization of media markets and its effects on global journalism. It analyzes the political, economic and technological drivers of media globalization and the emergence of a globalized public sphere. Effects on local journalism, politics and individual citizens will be considered. An emphasis of the course will be on the transformations of journalism as a profession in the light of globalization and digitalization as well as on the changes of media systems and media agendas under the conditions of globalization. The impact and potentials of global media, particularly the Internet, on journalism will be explored based on various examples throughout the course.
