Challenge #1 Struggling to understand a complex concept
Embrace a growth mindset:
“This is an opportunity for me to develop new learning techniques and deepen my understanding of the concept.”
Adopt this two-step strategy:
- Simplify and clarify
Break down complex concepts into smaller parts, use mind maps or diagrams to enhance underdstanding, actively recall information through testing and practice, and clarify doubts with professors, teaching assistants (TAs), or peer study groups.
- Broaden and apply
Explore different perspectives through diverse sources and reinforce understanding through practice problems, real-world examples, and teaching others.
Mind Your Library - Maximize your library resources:
- Look up the concept using the Library Search and read the textbooks and articles related to the concept. Check out our subject-specific research guides and databases too.
- Drop an email to library@smu.edu.sg to consult with a librarian for guidance on relevant and useful learning resources. Alternatively, talk to a Library Peer Advisor (LPA) for peer-to-peer advice and support.
- Find a quiet and focused space to study at our Li Ka Shing Library or Kwa Geok Choo Law Library, such as the Quiet Areas and Graduate Lounges.
By applying these strategies and resources, you will be better equipped to tackle and overcome any complex concepts you may face.
