The SMC is dedicated to promoting the amicable and fair settlement of disputes. It aims to create an environment in which people can work together to find enduring solutions to conflicts and tensions created by human interactions. It contributes to the building of a harmonious society, and a thriving business community, by broadening awareness of, and providing access to, constructive means of dispute resolution.
The purpose of the Community Mediation Centre is to provide mediation services in social, community or family disputes that do not involve a seizable offence (where police are legally empowered to arrest without a warrant) under any written law. Mediation sessions are conducted in a cordial and informal atmosphere, and as expeditiously as possible.
The Asian Mediation Association (“AMA”) came into being in Singapore on 17 August 2007 when five leading mediation centres in Asia signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The five founding members of the AMA share the common aim of promoting and facilitating the use of mediation to amicably settle business and commercial disputes.

UNCITRAL Convention on International Agreements Resulting from Mediation (the Singapore Mediation Convention, Singapore Convention on Mediation)
On June 25, 2018 during the 51st Session of UNCITRAL, final drafts were finalized for a Convention on the Enforcement of Mediation Settlements and a Model Law for the same. The drafts are being referred to the Commission for adoption later this year.
The Group also approved a resolution to name the Convention the “Singapore Mediation Convention” with a signing ceremony expected in Singapore in 2019.
This action concludes three years of vigorous debate with participation by 85 member states and 35 IGOs/NGOs. The action acknowledges the role of mediation for dispute settlement in cross border dispute resolution.
