Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the study for forecasting the environmental impacts, both negative and positive impacts from development projects or significant activities. Check out this video regarding the negative side of the how citizens view EIA. In this episode of "101 East", we ask if Thailand can strike a balance between big businesses and the environment. Industrial pollution in Thailand can be deadly, but a new court ruling which has suspended 76 polluting projects is costing jobs and billions in lost revenue.

The Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI) programme in Thailand was initiated in 2010 and runs to April 2013. Thailand has achieved remarkable economic growth in the past decade, but this has brought undesirable social and environmental impacts. Over-reliance on disposable plastic is a relatively recent economic and cultural change (just 60 years old), it has fundamentally changed the makeup of this planet. Thailand attracts more than 30 million visitors every year to its white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and other scenic spots. Experts say Thailand's environment is already paying a steep price. Beaches are overcrowded, corals destroyed, and dump sites filled to the brim with trash. The country's coastlines are shrinking up to 30 square kilometers every year, threatening communities by the sea.
