About Research Data Services @ SMU Libraries
The Research Data Services (RDS) team at SMU Libraries is committed to supporting the SMU community in developing data research skills and conducting data-driven research.
We also work closely with the Research Librarians to offer a range of services to support researchers throughout the research data lifecycle:

- Workshops, talks and events on related topics with the goal to develop and advance data research skills of the SMU community
- Support researchers throughout the research data lifecycle, including access to data, data analysis & visualization, research data management, and data deposit and publishing

We offer a range of data services and support in the following areas:
COLLECTING DATA
- Find and access data from free and subscribed sources
We assist researchers in locating and accessing data from both free and subscribed sources. Our Research Librarians can guide you in navigating various databases, repositories, and data portals to find relevant datasets for your research.
- Negotiate for dataset purchase & review license agreements
If you require specific datasets that are not freely available, we can help negotiate for dataset purchases and review license agreements on your behalf. Our goal is to facilitate access to the data you need for your research.
- Best practices for organizing and documenting data
We provide guidance on best practices for organizing and documenting your research data. Proper data organization and documentation enhance the reproducibility and longevity of your research, making it easier for you and others to understand and reuse the data effectively.
- Literature review tools and methods
Our librarians offer valuable support for researchers conducting literature reviews and systematic reviews. We can assist you in formulating search strategies, selecting appropriate databases, managing citations, critically appraising sources, and ensuring adherence to established methodologies and guidelines.
PROCESSING & ANALYSING DATA

During research consultations, our librarians and student consultants can help you with methods and tools for data cleaning, analysis, coding, statistical analysis, visualization and reproducible workflows.

- Meeting funder/journal requirements for open data and Data Management Plan
Our librarians can guide you through the process of creating DMPs that align with funder guidelines and help you navigate journal data sharing policies.
- Data deposit and publishing via SMU Research Data Repository following FAIR principles
As part of our commitment to the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) principles, we offer data deposit and publishing services via the SMU Research Data Repository. We can help you deposit and publish your research data, ensuring its long-term accessibility and visibility to the wider research community.
