Master of Science in Innovation : MGMT647

Course Description

This course introduces the student to design thinking and an array of design tools for integrating design thinking into an overall design process. Design thinking and tools is a powerful process that can improve product, service and experience concepts (selected applications to products and services will be covered).

The course is split into two parts, with Part 1 taught by Ted Tschang, and Part 2 by Adel Dimian.

In Part 1, the design thinking process (based on the IDEO/Stanford Design School process) is introduced. This is a qualitative process consisting of the stages of: the observation of users, ideation, and prototyping. Iteration can occur between any steps, and multiple cycles are typical. Applications of design thinking to product and service innovation will be discussed, along with varying of the design contexts, including the private sector, government and social sectors. Design thinking will be framed against traditional innovation processes and other types of thinking.

In Part 2, design tools and frameworks are introduced that allow the initial design ideas to be further carried through the concept development process to resulting prototypes and feasibility assessments. Value can be more readily created within an organizational context.

The course is the foundation for the creation of new products, services and businesses.

Learning Objectives

Part 1. Learn design thinking methodologies for the creation of products, services and experiences

Part 2. Learn ‘concept development’ tools and frameworks to improving design processes and mapping them to innovative outcomes.
