SPRT002: Intro to Sport Management - Functional Areas and Issues by Dr. Kenneth Tan

This course is an essential introduction to management studies in the context of sport and its delivery. The course examines common sport products and services and their delivery through sport organisations, whose legal identities and form are discussed. Emphasis will be on the growing sportscape in Singapore and how this growing industry could provide opportunities for various management, business, and professional services. The fundamental concepts and practices of sport management will be discussed and relate to some industry examples. Participants will be able to have first-hand experience to be involved in the 2016 ASEAN University Games (AUG), by planning and organizing an AUG Education Event. The AUG is major biennial sports event that involves athletes from the universities of the ASEAN member countries.

Some of these practices in sport are derived from the general management body of knowledge and best practices. However, sport issues such as consumption of services and products, management of sport organisations, marketing and promotions are contextually different from other industries. Thus, students will have the opportunities to examine the sport industry and its management in the course, and to relate to their own experiences and observations of the industry.

At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  1. Understand management through sport, definitions of sport management terms, historical perspectives of sport management, and the functions and roles of managers.
  2. Acquire knowledge of organisation and management processes, systems, and structures inherent in the sport sector.
  3. Develop knowledge and skills associated with effectiveness in various management functions related to the management and delivery of sport.
  4. Possess basic knowledge and understanding of human and physical resources, ethics, legal, aspects, marketing and promotion of sport and its products.
